Dictionary corner

I found these photographs of some work that we completed a few weeks back and thought you would like to see them.  We were working on learning the alphabet, understanding alphabetic order and using our knowledge to add words to our new dictionaries.  We will be keeping these dictionaries throughout the year and using them to help our writing.

Sum dog battles

As well as using sumdog in our maths lessons we have also been working independently in the computer suite.  The children's enthusiasm was infectious as they battled against themselves and classmates.

Sum dog instructions

Today Miss Morris launched Sumdog which is a new maths application.  It is a series of free maths games that are designed to improve mental math fluency.  Most of the games are multiplayer, letting students around the world practice their math against one another.

I have sent home a letter explaining how to change the difficulty levels of sundog games so that your children can get the most from playing.  The following is an extract from that letter to help you remember how to change the settings.

  1. Under the blue training tab on the left hand side of the screen select the blue hyperlink “show levels”
  2. Your child is currently working in level 1 and/or 2.
  3. Click on the blue hyper link “select skill”.  A drop down box will appear stating the learning objectives that can be covered.  You can select individual learning objectives by clicking on the green tick or you can leave them all ticked.
  4. Once you have put a tick next to all objectives that you want to get your child to work on you can select a game to play by moving to the green tab on the right hand side of the screen.  You can scroll through the games using the left and right white arrows or select the blue hyperlink “show all games”
You can find sumdog on the front page of the school website or by clicking on the link below.

Your child will need their unique log on which will be sent home on Tuesday 11 December.

Remember to let me know how you get on and what ganes you enjoy the most.

Victorian School Day

WE have had the best day today in Victorian school.  Have a look at our photos to see just how much fun and to find out what we have been learning.

Lining up ready to walk to the Victorian classroom.
Of course the boys were first in the line.

The "scary" Victorian teacher Miss McNulty.

Standing behind their chairs waiting to be told to sit down.

Sitting down in silence.

Explaining our classroom rules. One of the hardest to follow was for
all children to write with their right hands.

Learning to use an ink pen.

Mastering the spinning top.

Drawing pictures of what we looked like in our victorian costumes.

Can you get the ball in the cup?

Playing marbles.

Listening to the Victorian Teacher's diary.  We heard how a child
was puched into the cesspit and became very ill.

Inspecting the children's hands.  Cleanliness was very important
to the Victorians.

Hearing all about life working in the mill.

Learning how to use the carbolic soap.

Being taught how to spin the top by a master.

Writing using a slate and slate pen.....the squeaky noise was horrible.

Oh no what has this pupil done to wear the dunce's cap.

Copy writing.

Tasting the mill workers porridge.

Maths the Victorian way.

That teacher looks cross and she has her cane to hand!!!

Receiving his punishment very bravely !!!
(please note no children were harmed in the making of this reconstruction !!)

Copy writing forming each letter separately then using the blotting paper.

It realy was the most fantastic day and the children were buzzing with all their learning.  Thank you to all parents who helped with such fantastic costumes.
